FITNESS FOR GOOD
Fitness for Good (FFG), modeled off of the GoodGym program in the United Kingdom, is a program designed to reduce social isolation in community adults while simultaneously increasing activity levels and volunteerism in community members. The program will match recreational walkers, joggers, and runners (termed: athletes) with older adults (termed: participants) in Roanoke and coordinate times to meet and interact in the home of the older adult or other specified location. The participants are not expected to exercise with the athletes (unless they want to!) and it is up to the athlete and participant to decide how to spend their time together; this could be relaxing, playing cards or drinking tea for example. During their visits, athletes may perform small jobs or tasks for the person with whom they are visiting in addition to serving as a social support and a first-alert system for any potential health or social challenges the participant may be facing. If more time-intensive jobs are identified during these visits (i.e., lawn cleanups, small home repairs, or safety/mobility upgrades), a group run/walk can be planned with additional athletes and resources arranged to address these needs.
We are currently launching in Roanoke City and Roanoke County.
